Extended Access

Extended opening surgeries at Shires Healthcare are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings 6:30pm to 8pm. There are also appointments available at one of our Primary Care Network practices on Friday evening and Saturday all day. Please ask the receptionist regarding these appointments.

These surgeries are aimed at patients who find it difficult to access appointments during normal opening hours. Patients who have an appointment booked during extended hours will enter the surgery by contacting the receptionist via the intercom.

Requests for routine appointments and repeat prescriptions will not be accepted during extended hours

As a patient at Shires Healthcare you might be able to use the extended access appointments available at other practices. This is a new service commissioned by NHS England which has enabled collaborative working to allow additional access.

This additional access will be in the form of pre-bookable and on the day appointments which can be booked via Shires Healthcare. These will be available during evenings and weekends. This is in addition to the services the practice currently offers.

One afternoon per month the surgery will be closed from 1pm to 5pm for QUality Educational Study Time (QUEST). We will then reopen 5pm to 6:30pm. If you need a doctor in an emergency whilst the surgery is closed, please telephone 01623 742558.

This protected time is authorised by the Derby & Derbyshire ICB and provides practices with a small amount of protected time to concentrate on essential training and quality. Please see below a list of dates QUESTs will take place:

NHS 111 online is for people aged 5 and over. Call NHS 111 if you need help for a child under 5.

Calls are free from both landlines and mobile phones.

Out of hours services are generally busy so please think carefully before asking to see a doctor and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

111 online is a fast and convenient alternative to the 111 phone service and provides an option for people who want to access 111 digitally. 

Your needs will be assessed and you will be given advice about whether you need:

• Treat yourself at home
• Go to a Primary Care Centre

If you need face to face medical attention you may be asked to attend a Primary Care Centre.
