Midwifery Services

Midwives provide continuity of care throughout pregnancy, after the baby is born and during labour if opportunity allows. The midwives try to give women choices in pregnancy empowering them to make their own choice for themselves and their families.

Health Visitor Services

Health Visitors are all qualified nurses of wide experience often covering midwifery. Health Visitors are training in child development, community health, family structure, psychology and health promotion. The team in Shirebrook also includes Nursery Nurses who have specialised skills in play and child development. As part of the Creswell, Langwith/Whaley Thorns and Shirebrook Sure Start Team we are able to link into a variety of services aimed at families with children under 4 years of age to enable parents to give their child a healthier start in life and be better prepared for school.

Most of the Health Visitors work is with parents, carers of young children and children with special needs, although they do sometimes work with older people. A Health Visitor will contact you before or soon after the birth of a new baby. They offer support and advice in a varied aspects of child health and development including behaviour management, minor ailments, nutrition, safety and immunisation.

Details on local support groups, nurseries, parent & toddler groups, toy libraries and voluntary organisations are also available. Health Visitors have excellent listening skills and may provide individual or family support in times of stress or anxiety.
